Liposuction
How
often have you stared at your reflection
in the mirror wishing that you could improve
the look of your body? Liposuction can
produce spectacular results by sculpting
stubborn areas that do not respond well
to diet and exercise. Liposuction has
been around since the early 1980's and
has become the most commonly performed
cosmetic procedure in the United States.
It is important to realize
that although liposuction may be a solution to an existing problem,
it is not a surgical cure for bad eating habits or an alternative
to keeping fit.
Advantages of having
liposuction surgery
Liposuction has become more popular over the years mainly because
it produces more precise results with a faster recovery time. Liposuction
is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted
fat from specific areas.
Common places where women
have liposuction surgery;
- Hips
- Abdomen
- Inner and outer thighs
- Knees
- Lower legs
Men are most frequently
treated for the following;
- "love handles"
- Abdomen
- Enlarged male breasts
- Arms
- Neck and face
Consultation
When you have a consultation with a surgeon, a complete medical
history is taken and a physical examination is conducted in order
to evaluate the body's condition. During the consultation, the dermatologic
surgeon will describe the procedure and what results can be expected.
It is important not to have unrealistic expectations. There is a
healing period a patient will have to endure before he or she can
enjoy the results.
Procedure
Liposuction removes fat by using thin suction tubes (cannulae) that
are placed into the body fat through small incisions. A vacuum is
applied through a hose attached to the cannula. This is how fat
is drawn out from specific areas of the body.
Candidates
- There are no absolute
age limits for having liposuction surgery; however having good
skin elasticity will always produce better results.
- Those aged 16 to those
over 80 years of age have benefited from liposuction.
- Patients with localized
areas of protruding fat achieve the most dramatic results.
- Patients who are slightly
overweight can also benefit from liposuction. However, the closer
you are to your normal weight the better results you will achieve.
People who suffer from
medical problems such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease or
poor blood circulation are not good candidates for this type of
medical procedure.
Risks
Liposuction is a very safe type of surgery. Nevertheless, bruising,
swelling, temporary numbness, and discomfort in the surgically treated
areas may occur but are usually gone within a few weeks.
As with abdominoplasty,
there is sometimes the risk of complications. Infection and delayed
healing are risks that increase with the number of areas treated
at the same time. There is also more risk of complications when
larger areas are treated.
